Pigesur is an ongoing series of pictures exploring womanhood, self-image and the male gaze. Through self-portraits and portraits of women, it explores the feeling of being perceived with gendered prejudice. This series is about the dilemma of wanting to be pretty but not being sure if it is for the right reasons, wanting to be seen but also to hide, but mostly about wanting to be left in peace. It is a sour project, a projection of anger that has build up but never found a place.
Pigesur (to be “girl-sour”) is a stereotypical Danish term describing an emotional reaction coming from an offended female. A girl who is pigesur is angry without any valid reason, often as a way to get attention or manipulate. The project was realized for a duo exhibition with Clara Ketter under the same name.
